  • Use SQLyog ( as a frontend for mysql (similar to TOAD). The binary is only for Windows, but works well with wine.
  • If you accidentally delete one of the Oracle datafiles and you cannot open the db anymore, the final solution (which drops everything in the tablespace that belongs to that datafile) is to start the DB in "mount" mode (startup mount) and to issue alter database datafile '/mnt/yourdir/yourfile.dbf' offline drop; 
  • This when you get error messages like:
    SQL> alter database open;
    alter database open
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01157: cannot identify/lock data file 10 - see DBWR trace file
    ORA-01110: data file 10: '/mnt/yourdir/yourfile.dbf'
